I want to be a Pilates Instructor

Pilates Instructor Certification Coursework is for:

  • A personal trainer, yoga instructor who wants to add Pilates to their current practice
  • A Licensed Massage Therapist interested in adding Pilates to their skill set
  • A dancer who seeks a post-dance career that combines their professional discipline, body and movement awareness
  • An individual with personal Pilates experience who wants to translate their new-found passion into a satisfying full or part-time career

Instructor Certification Courses

  • Begin with Intensive Mat Plus or Intensive Reformer course, at this point you can test to get a certification in Mat and Reformer or just one of the two.  If you are looking to work in a gym setting sometimes this is all you need.
  • Then take Intensive Cadillac, Chair & Barrels, which is recommended if you would like to work in a studio setting.
  • Anatomy is a prerequisite to any certification course.  Functional Anatomy is a wonderful course if you are lacking in this area.  Please check the schedule for it's next offering.
  • You can continue on with your training taking Advanced Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chairs, and Barrels.

What does Certification entail?

Once you have completed the course work you then need to complete practice hours, which vary by course.  Please see Merrithew™ for an updated list of hours.

  • Observation hours, you must observe a STOTT® Certified Instructor.  This is a great chance to listen to the way other instructors cue, and watch how they interact with clients.
  • Practice hours, you must practice the course work.  This is great way to not only study for the exam, but to feel the exercise in your own body.  You are a better instructor when you know what it feels like to perform the exercise.
  • Practice teaching hours, Learning Pilates is like learning a new language.  You need to learn how to speak the language, watch the body, make corrections, and remember what the next thing is you are going to teach.

After you have completed your study hours, then you need to take the exam.

  • Schedule the exam directly with Nicole Boehm, or with any other Instructor Trainer in your area.
  • The exam is 1/2 practical teaching a body.
  • The other 1/2 is written exam.

For the most up to date exam information please see the following link.
